Welcome to my site, writtenbybrian.

The types of stories I like to write are the same types of stories I like to read. These include stories where there is something supernatural or paranormal with a good measure of suspense and mystery. I do read and write some horror but tend to keep the level of gore to just a mention so as to let the movie projector in your head do more of the work.

What you won’t find is hard raw gore on my bookshelves or loaded on my Kindle or at the tips of my fingers as I type the next paragraph of a soon to be released novel. I don’t read it, I don’t know it – so I don’t write it.

I also won’t bore you with novels that try to challenge the political or environmental domains or nest hidden messages intended to have substantial meanings a lifetime from now – nope, I just like to tell a good story.

So why do I write? Yes, this is one of the more common questions I’ve been asked. I write because I feel compelled to write. I also write because it happens to be one of my favorite things to do. I’m not a fast writer – in fact, I can lose hours, sometimes days, working on a few or even just one sentence.

In my opinion every sentence should add value to the story being told (easier said than done). At the same time, it needs to sound fluid as you read it. Working the structure of a sentence so that the words flow together is one of the things I enjoy most when writing.

A quick trick for the new writer – read your sentences aloud. Listen to how they sound. If a sentence doesn’t flow or it sounds clunky or complicated then rework the words. Choose new words. Use the tools you have. Look for synonyms that fit. Work the sentence until it pours off our tongue like sugar from a spoon. Smooth and sweet.
